In the commentary at the Song of Songs of Saint Grigorios of Nissis, we find the syntagma „the winter of disobedience” [PG 44, col. 869]. Of disobedience to God. Which kills the root of the good deed.
Through following, the spring, when the root gives again life, understood ghostually, it is an expression of God’s mercy with us. For that the sin kills the good deed.
But, through repentance, we come back to life, at the life with God, because He elevates us to the holy life through His forgiveness. Therefore, we cannot be a ghostual spring without God. We cannot resurrect and return to life, if God does not raise us with His hand. Only Him brings us at the good life, at the life full of joy, at the divine life.
