Sermon on the 4th Sunday after Pentecost [2026]

My beloveds[1],

in Capernaum [Καπερναούμ] there was an ecatontarchos [ἑκατόνταρχος], a roman centurion, who was praying to the Lord. Who prayed for his servant who was paralyzed. And who was suffering terribly [Matteos 8, 5-6, BYZ]. He did not have problems, but he had a subordinate of his. Because we too can pray not only for those in our house or our family, but for all those we see alone and helpless and seriously ill. Because the mercy for people is natural, it comes from the depths of our hearts, and it becomes ghostual when we pray a lot for people and when we help them ghostually[2].

The hierarchical superior could be indifferent. The commanders are often indifferent to the needs of their subalterns. But if this man prayed for his healing and prayed to the One who knew that He could heal him, this shows us that each of us knows how to do good, if we want to do good to someone. That our indifference is sinful, because we know what we should do and we don’t do it. And our great sins are precisely these: the things we don’t do, although we know we should do them. And we don’t do them because we’re comfortable, because we don’t want to get in trouble, because we don’t want to bother ourselves for others[3].

When we witness the catastrophe of others indifferently, we are, in fact, witnessing our own spiritual death indifferently. For, if we do not have immediate reactions to the needs of others, we are no longer spiritually alive. We do not care about others, because we do not care about ourselves either. And we commit the most atrocious sins in this state of indifference, of indifference to everyone, first of all to ourselves, to our soul and salvation. And we do not care about others, because we have killed our soul through sins. We do not care, because we no longer feel the gravity of the situation. For if we felt the gravity of the situation, we would immediately react, we would immediately jump to the aid of those who suffer, of those in need[4].

And how can we help them, who, in turn, are with our problems? Through prayer, through our attention to their problems, through compassion for them. If we cannot help them with money or things, we can help them by being close to them and wishing them all the good. We cannot donate an organ for them, we cannot take them to the Hospital, we cannot care for them because we don’t have with what, but we cannot be indifferent to them in our heart. Because if we are not indifferent to them, then they are not alone. And God will grant them not to feel alone, because we have them in our heart and we pray for them[5].

And our prayer, although it seems like their utopian help, is what helps them and us to remain human. Because man sees the pain of another and hurts for it. He cannot be truly indifferent, because he knows that pain is piercing, that pain is heartbreaking. And the commander wanted to stop seeing the pain of the other, he wanted to see him alive and well, although he could have killed him immediately and gotten rid of him. But you can’t kill the one you love! Love takes care of the one it loves, love cares for his wounds, love stands by you in your needs[6].

The centurion believes in the word of the Lord, in the power of His word. If the Lord comes and heals someone, then He can do this from a distance too. The centurion believed in the power of the Lord, in His healing power. That is why he asks Him: „Speak only [with] the word [Matteos 8, 8, BYZ]. For it is enough for You to speak and Your word will become reality. And from here we see what it means to keep your word. How important it is to have word, to fulfill your promises. Because people only believe you if you have word, if you keep your word[7].

The Lord marvels and praises the centurion’s faith. For no one had ever believed in His word before [Matteos 8, 10, BYZ]. They were waiting for the Lord’s miracles, they were waiting for His wonderful deeds in their life. But the centurion believed in His word, in His decision, in His kindness towards people. That is why the Lord showed that the sons of the Emperordom come from everywhere to the table of the Emperordom of heavens, while those who were to inherit the Emperordom will be cast into outer darkness [Matteos 8, 11-12, BYZ]. And they will be cast out not because God does not want them, but because they separated themselves from the Emperordom, not believing in Him[8].

The Lord agrees with the great faith of the commander, because He agrees with all who believe in Him without limits. He assures him that He will do for him as he believed in Him [Matteos 8, 13, BYZ], in His power full of love and mercy towards men. For if he, the man, was full of mercy, how much more will He, their God, be full of mercy towards them. And His healing word healed the sick man in that hour [Ibidem], when He accepted his healing. And the mercy of men is full of the mercy of God, when men want the salvation of their fellow men. But when we pity ourselves in a sinful way, when we do not want to work hard to do good, then we do not choose God’s will, but our own impenitence[9].

The children of the Emperordom come from all over, while Hell is the place where there is no mercy. The merciful gather in His Emperordom, while the merciless are cast into Hell, into the darkness that has no mercy. And why is mercy the one that makes the difference? Because mercy shows the goodness in you, it shows that you are alive, that you are in relationship with the all-good One. If you no longer see the pain of another, you have given up on yourself and on him, you have given up on communion. But if you are full of mercy, you are full of the mercy of God, Who wants to fill everyone with His mercy. Amin[10]!

Amin!
