Sermon on the Beheading of Saint Ioannis the Baptist [August 29, 2026]
My beloveds[1],
Peter Wüthrich[2] took a set of photographs of various people, who had, instead of wings, an open book, in the form of wings, on their backs[3]. I saw it in The Museum of Contemporary Art from Thessaloniki[4] on august 20, 2026. A very warm thursday. With other words, the artist told us that whoever has book, has wings. He can fly. But the real flight is the faith. Man can fly ghostually because he believes in God. And Saint Ioannis the Baptist is the iconographically winged one, because his wings are prayer and fasting. And his mouth, full of truth, is what brought him the death. Because he was martyred for truth. Because he confessed the truth of God[5].
Also in Thessaloniki, on august 21, 2026, I saw a Divine Icon of Saint Ioannis the Baptist from the 18th century. Located in the stunning Byzantine Museum of Culture. And here Saint Ioannis is winged, has the flag of the Cross in his left hand and the Lord in the Holy Chalice, while his severed head is next to his right foot, placed in a large chalice. And, dressed in the clothes of ascesis, of repentance, he looks at us with divine strength, always reminding us that being strong in faith means being strong in our love for God. For the faith is full of love for God. The faith expects everything from God. Because we, faithful people, love God with our whole being, as those who always want to do His will with us[6].
In a Holy Icon of today’s feast, the soldier cuts off the head of Saint Ioannis the Baptist, and the woman carries it on the salver as a trophy. In both hypostases, his eyes are closed[7]. But, in fact, our eyes are closed, they are indifferent, they are blind to injustices. We pretend not to see them. And we don’t want to see the pain and unhappiness around us, because we don’t want to help those in need. We pass by carelessly, we pass by cold, indifferent, and the indifference is our state of spiritual death. Because we don’t want to help. We don’t want to be active in the life of the world. We don’t want to be the people who actually help people[8].
The soldier cut off his head with the sword, and the one carrying his head is Irodias[9]’ daughter, Salomi [Σαλώμη[10]]. And for her lewd dance, which aroused the lust of Irodis [Ἡρῴδης[11]], she asked for and received from him the head of Saint Ioannis the Baptist. When did she ask him for such a monstrosity? On his birthday! Because then the Emperor gave a dinner [δεῖπνον] for the dignitaries of the State [Marcos 6, 21, BYZ]. And the girl danced, he liked her, and he promised to give her everything she asked for [Marcos 6, 22, BYZ]. But here comes the wickedness! Because the daughter asks her mother what to ask for. And her mother, full of hatred, tells her: „The head of Ioannis the Baptist [Τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ]” [Marcos 6, 24, BYZ]. And why did Irodias hate Saint Ioannis? Because he had publicly said to Irodis: „It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife [Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου]!” [Marcos 6, 18, BYZ]. For she was the Emperor’s sister-in-law and not his wife[12].
And the mouth of the Holy Prophet, which rebuked sin, was closed by his martyric’s death. But, when his head was brought on salver in the midst of the assembly, his tongue confessed the Emperor’s sin. And Irodias pricked his tongue with a needle so that his mouth would be silent[13]. But, no matter how much we want to hide the truth, it always comes to light. Our sins come to light, because they are darkness. And in order to be washed from our inner darkness, we must confess and receive forgiveness for our sins. Because our sins are death, they are eternal death. And only our God cleanses us from them[14].
Irodias mocked his holy head and buried it in a hidden and dishonorable place[15]. But the holy head of Saint Ioannis the Baptist has reached us! And he, from the Emperordom of God, helps us unceasingly, because his death was for eternal life. Because when people want to hide the truth, God reveals it to everyone. When people lie, deceive, pretend not to know, God always tells us His truth. And His truth is what saves us, because we live in His truth[16].
The Emperor made a drunken promise and his promise produced a monstrous thing: the martyrdom of the Saint. The woman’s wickedness came to the surface, then when her daughter danced debauchedly and received an irresponsible promise. But the truth is this: Saint Ioannis was martyred for speaking the truth. He died for speaking the truth in a world that lies continuously. Which hides its sins, claims to be „righteous”, but is deeply corrupt, depraved[17].
And what is the lesson of truth? That the truth is the sincerity of the world and we must always choose it. We must choose God’s truth in our heart and in our life. We must live according to His truth and enjoy Him. Because our fulfillment is the life with God. Without Him we have nothing, we are nothing. But with Him we have everything. Amin[18]!

Cu alte cuvinte, artistul ne-a spus că cine are carte, are aripi.

Amin!
