Sermon at the beginning of the churchly year [September 1, 2026]
My beloveds[1],
the beginning of the churchly year is always a living hope, because we know that God gave us this life so that we can serve Him every day. And that is why, when the churchly year begins on september 1, we know that all the liturgical days, all the feasts, all the fasts, all our ecclesial joys begin again. Because we live in the rhythm of the Church of God, in the mysterious rhythm of life with God, purifying ourselves, enlightening ourselves and sanctifying ourselves ceaselessly in our relationship with Him. And if others do not see how the days pass, where they pass, our days pass through us, because every day we change ghostually, we rejuvenate ghostually, because God is the One who rejuvenates us through His eternal glory. And, although we grow old every day, we also rejuvenate every day. Because our soul is the one that changes ceaselessly in its mysterious relationship with God[2].
For 30 years we have had Bishopric in Alexandria, because we have Father Bishop Galaction Stângă, since september 1, 1996[3], as our Father, of all. And the grace of God has worked through his person abundantly, because he has filled us all with the blessings of God in our life. Therefore, this beginning of the year is a fulfilling one, it is one full of gratitude, because we thank God for all the fulfillment of the 30 years of Episcopate in our midst. And, at the same time, we worship the right hand of Saint Vasilios the Great, our Father, brought to Alexandria from Athens[4], so that we may be filled with the blessing and prayers of Saint Vasilios for us. For when we kiss the Holy Relics, we are filled with the glory of God from His Saints, those who pray unceasingly for our salvation, for all of us[5].
Father Bishop Galaction is the renewer of Monachism in Teleorman and the dynamizer par excellence of liturgical and ghostual life in our region. Through the Monasteries, Churches, published books, through the multitude of cheirotoned persons, through the pilgrimages and conferences initiated here, our Bishop has highlighted the living, liturgical and ascetic Church in Teleorman, which loves beauty, loves moderation, loves balance in everything it does, with all the financial hardships it experiences. Because the life with God is the one that does not exclude hardships and troubles, but which is fulfilled precisely in spite of them. And we serve God and live with Him, because His life fulfills us first and foremost and not material benefits of all kinds[6].
Although he is 73 years old, having been born on may 17, 1953[7], our Galaction, our Father, the one who always takes care of us all, is always on the move, serving in various Churches, always present in our midst. And, as a Priest, you feel a great strengthening in your service when you see that your Bishop serves unceasingly, because you feel like doing the same. You feel like following his good example of dedication. For each Service is a dedication of ours to God and to our confreres. You serve for all in order to serve for yourself, for your salvation. And to serve means to rejoice with all, to be fulfilled in communion, in communion with God and with all the members of the Church[8].
What does it mean to start something? It means to believe in the present and in your future. You start writing a book because you know you can write it, but you need God’s time, His gift of time to write it, and His strengthening. When you start something, you have a deep sentiment that that thing is fulfilling for you. And if you complete it and it is a good thing, willed by God, that thing is just that: fulfilling. You want to study and the study fulfills you. You work and your work bears fruits. But to bear fruits, you have to work conscientiously, you have to work enlightened by God, in order to truly fulfill yourself. Because everything we do with God is truly fulfilling[9].
Today, at the Divine Liturgy, his synodal friends came, but also us, his Priests and Deacons friends. So that we can enjoy 30 years of Episcopate in Alexandria. It is a day of tuesday, it is a day of the beginning of the year, it is a fulfilling day. Because the Church is together and serves together every day. And that is why, when our sins make us fall from the communion of the Church, our forgiveness of sins also means a re-entry into the communion of the Church. An inner re-entry into the communion of the Church. Because you must feel within yourself the grace of God, His forgiveness, the love for God and for all people[10].
But the beginning is also a look back, not just forward. Because you look at what you have done, but also at the projects in progress. I have books written and published, but also books in the works. I have to finish the ones I started some time ago. And in order to finish them, to see them published, I have to make time to write, to read, to correct, to publish. Because a book started in the past is fulfilled in its time, at the time of its publication. It is like a tree that you wait for, whose fruits you wait for until they ripen. You cannot force the book, just as you cannot force the fig tree to give us good figs. You have to wait. To wait with God, with great patience, working conscientiously on the book. Because it will be written, it will end and many will enjoy it[11].
Our Bishop grew old with us, expecting us to be more and more responsible in our life and in our ministry. He was gentle and kind to us, he helped us, he strengthened us in everything, because he believed in us. But, at the same time, we ourselves must believe in our vocation and live our churchly ministry with a holy conscience. Because we are not storekeepers or policemen of people, but their ghostual Fathers, those who teach them to be saved. And for this we always need the enlightenment of God, so that we know what to say to the people of God. For He is our enlightenment and peace, He is our strengthening, and from our God we expect all good and all our guidance in the life with Him[12].
God has placed the weathers [καιροὺς] and the times [χρόνους] into His power[13], because He knows all of our life. And that is why He blesses the crown of the year [τὸν στέφανον τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ] with His goodness[14]. He blesses each of our days, but also the entire year of our life, filling us with His goodness. For His goodness fills us with life and joy. Through His goodness we feel His care for us, His living desire to save us, to live eternally with Him. For why would God bless us now, if He did not want to bless us eternally? But, precisely because He fills us now with His glory, He teaches us that He eternally wants to fill us with His life, because He wants us to be eternally with Him[15].
In the kontakion of the day we are told that God blesses the detour of the year [τὴν ἐνιαύσιον περίοδον], the entire period of the year[16]. Because all days must be blessed with His mercy towards us. Because He saves us through His mercy, through His boundless mercifulness, all those who honor Him[17]. And that’s why, it’s one thing to feel His mercy with you all the time and another to be indifferent to any day, any holiday, any commandment of God. With God we experience everything, being filled with His glory, while without Him we have only pain and sadness. And that is why we do not want to leave the life with Him for the endless sadness, because the life with Him is our joy and fulfillment[18].
At many years, my beloveds, and much increase in everything you do! May God make you happy and strengthen you in everything! Amin[19]!

[2] Iubiții mei, începutul anului bisericesc e întotdeauna o nădejde vie, pentru că știm că Dumnezeu ne-a dat viața aceasta pentru ca să Îi slujim Lui în fiecare zi. Și de aceea, când începe anul bisericesc la 1 septembrie, noi știm că încep din nou toate zilele liturgice, toate praznicele, toate posturile, toate bucuriile noastre eclesiale. Pentru că noi trăim în ritmul Bisericii lui Dumnezeu, în ritmul tainic al vieții cu Dumnezeu, curățindu-ne, luminându-ne și sfințindu-ne neîncetat în relația cu El. Și dacă alții nu văd cum trec zilele, pe unde trec, zilele noastre trec prin noi, pentru că în fiecare zi ne schimbăm duhovnicește, întinerim duhovnicește, pentru că Dumnezeu e Cel care ne întinerește prin slava Lui cea veșnică. Și, deși îmbătrânim pe fiecare zi, tot pe fiecare zi și întinerim. Pentru că sufletul nostru e cel care se schimbă neîncetat în relația sa tainică cu Dumnezeu.

[5] De 30 de ani de zile avem Episcopie la Alexandria, pentru că îl avem pe Părintele Episcop Galaction Stângă, din 1 septembrie 1996, ca Părinte al nostru, al tuturor. Și harul lui Dumnezeu a lucrat prin persoana sa din destul, pentru că ne-a umplut pe toți de binefacerile lui Dumnezeu în viața noastră. De aceea, acest început de an este unul împlinitor, este unul plin de recunoștință, pentru că Îi mulțumim lui Dumnezeu pentru toată împlinirea celor 30 de ani de Episcopat în mijlocul nostru. Și, în același timp, ne închinăm mâinii drepte a Sfântului Vasilios cel Mare, Părintele nostru, adusă la Alexandria din Atena, pentru ca să ne umplem de binecuvântarea și de rugăciunile Sfântului Vasilios cele pentru noi. Căci atunci când sărutăm Sfintele Moaște, noi ne umplem de slava lui Dumnezeu din Sfinții Lui, cei care se roagă neîncetat pentru mântuirea noastră, a tuturor.
[6] Părintele Episcop Galaction este înnoitorul Monahismului în Teleorman și dinamizatorul prin excelență al vieții liturgice și duhovnicești în ținutul nostru. Prin Mănăstirile, Bisericile, cărțile publicate, prin mulțimea de persoane hirotonite, prin pelerinajele și conferințele inițiate aici, Episcopul nostru a pus în evidență Biserica vie, liturgică și ascetică din Teleorman, care iubește frumosul, iubește cumpătarea, iubește echilibrul în tot ceea ce face, cu toate neajunsurile financiare pe care le trăiește. Pentru că viața cu Dumnezeu e cea care nu exclude greutățile și necazurile, ci care se împlinește tocmai în ciuda lor. Și noi Îi slujim lui Dumnezeu și trăim cu El, pentru că viața Lui ne împlinește în primul rând și nu beneficiile materiale de tot felul.

[8] Deși are 73 de ani, fiind născut pe 17 mai 1953, Galaction al nostru, Părintele nostru, cel care are mereu grijă de noi toți, e mereu în mișcare, slujind în diverse Biserici, fiind prezent mereu în mijlocul nostru. Și, ca Preot, simți o mare întărire în slujire când vezi că Episcopul tău slujește neîncetat, pentru că simți să faci și tu la fel. Simți să îi urmezi exemplul bun de dăruire. Căci fiecare Slujbă e o dăruire a noastră lui Dumnezeu și confraților noștri. Slujești pentru toți ca să slujești și pentru tine, pentru mântuirea ta. Și a sluji înseamnă a te bucura împreună cu toți, a te împlini în comuniune, în comuniunea cu Dumnezeu și cu toți membrii Bisericii.
[9] Ce înseamnă să începi ceva anume? Înseamnă să crezi în prezentul și în viitorul tău. Începi să scrii o carte pentru că știi că poți să o scrii, dar ai nevoie de timpul lui Dumnezeu, de darul Său de timp pentru ca să o scrii, și de întărirea Lui. Când începi ceva ai sentimentul profund că acel lucru e împlinitor pentru tine. Și dacă îl duci la bun sfârșit și e un lucru bun, voit de Dumnezeu, acel lucru chiar așa este: unul împlinitor. Vrei să studiezi și studiul te împlinește. Muncești și munca ta produce roade. Dar ca să produci roade, trebuie să muncești conștiincios, trebuie să muncești luminat de Dumnezeu, pentru ca să te împlinești cu adevărat. Pentru că tot ceea ce facem cu Dumnezeu e cu adevărat împlinitor.
[10] Astăzi, la Dumnezeiasca Liturghie, au venit prietenii săi sinodali, dar și noi, prietenii săi Preoți și Diaconi. Pentru ca să ne bucurăm la 30 de ani de Episcopat la Alexandria. E o zi de marți, e o zi de început de an, e o zi împlinitoare. Pentru că Biserica e împreună și slujește împreună în fiecare zi. Și de aceea, când păcatele noastre ne fac să cădem din comuniunea Bisericii, iertarea noastră de păcate înseamnă totodată și o reintrare în comuniunea Bisericii. O reintrare interioară în comuniunea Bisericii. Pentru că trebuie să simți în tine harul lui Dumnezeu, iertarea Lui, iubirea pentru Dumnezeu și pentru toți oamenii.
[11] Însă începutul e și o privire înapoi, nu doar înainte. Pentru că privești la ce ai făcut, dar și la proiectele aflate în derulare. Am cărți scrise și publicate, dar și cărți în lucru. Pe cele începute cândva trebuie să le duc la bun sfârșit. Și ca să le duc la final, să le văd publicate, trebuie să îmi fac timp pentru a scrie, pentru a citi, pentru a corecta, pentru a publica. Pentru că o carte începută în trecut se împlinește la vremea ei, la vremea publicării ei. Ea e ca un pom pe care îl aștepți, căruia îi aștepți roadele până la coacerea lor. Nu poți forța cartea, cum nu poți forța smochinul să ne dea smochine bune. Trebuie să aștepți. Să aștepți cu Dumnezeu, cu multă răbdare, muncind conștiincios la carte. Pentru că ea se va scrie, ea se va sfârși și se vor bucura mulți de ea.
[12] Episcopul nostru a îmbătrânit împreună cu noi, așteptând ca noi să fim tot mai responsabili în viața și în slujirea noastră. A fost blând și cu bun cu noi, ne-a ajutat, ne-a întărit în toate, pentru că a crezut în noi. Dar, în același timp, noi înșine trebuie să credem în vocația noastră și să ne trăim slujirea bisericească cu conștiință sfântă. Pentru că noi nu suntem magazioneri și nici polițiști ai oamenilor, ci Părinții lor duhovnicești, cei care îi învățăm să se mântuie. Și pentru aceasta avem nevoie mereu de luminarea lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca să știm ce să spunem poporului lui Dumnezeu. Căci El e luminarea și pacea noastră, El e întărirea noastră și de la Dumnezeul nostru așteptăm tot binele și toată călăuzirea noastră în viața cu El.

Căci bunătatea Sa ne umple de viață și de bucurie. Prin bunătatea Sa simțim grija Lui față de noi, dorința Lui vie de a ne mântui, de a trăi veșnic cu El. Căci de ce ne-ar binecuvânta Dumnezeu acum, dacă nu ar dori să ne binecuvânte veșnic? Însă, tocmai pentru că El ne umple acum de slava Lui, El ne învață că voiește veșnic să ne umple de viața Sa, pentru că voiește să fim veșnic cu El.

[18] În condacul zilei ni se spune că Dumnezeu binecuvântă ocolul anului [τὴν ἐνιαύσιον περίοδον], perioada întregului an. Pentru că toate zilele trebuie binecuvântate cu mila Lui față de noi. Pentru că El ne mântuie prin mila Lui, prin îndurarea Sa cea nemărginită, pe toți cei care Îl cinstesc pe El. Și de aceea, una e să simți mila Lui cu tine tot timpul și alta e să fii indiferent față de orice zi, față de orice sărbătoare, față de orice poruncă a lui Dumnezeu. Cu Dumnezeu le trăim pe toate plini fiind de slava Lui, pe când, fără El, avem numai durere și tristețe. Și de aceea nu dorim să lăsăm viața cu El pentru tristețea nesfârșită, pentru că viața cu El e bucuria și împlinirea noastră.
[19] La mulți ani, iubiții mei, și mult spor în tot ceea ce faceți! Dumnezeu să vă bucure și să vă întărească în toate! Amin!
